FRELLING BATS

Posted by: Lisa  :  Category: Photos, Things That Go Bump..

Last night I heard this odd sound that I THOUGHT was a kitten batting (NO pun intended) at the door to my bedroom.   So, I opened the door and see….nothing.   No cat.   No kittens.  “Greeeeeeeeeeeeeeat” I thought to myself.   So, I looked further into the hall and down through the open foyer.

What did I see you ask?  A fluttering, frelling bat.   I hate the suckers (nope, NO pun there either).

The Bat

I closed my door and tried to ignore the bat, because I was NOT in the mood and Ben wasn’t home to get rid of it.

I soon heard a scratching at my door.  I looked.  Yes, I LOOKED!!!  STUPID, STUPID MOVE.  You know, kind of like the girl/guy in a horror flick who runs UPSTAIRS when she’s trying to get away from the killer.  STUPID.

My eyes were met with a furry little ball of evil, trying to claw it’s way into my room using the space at the top of my door.  Yeah.  I freaked.

I never moved so fast in my life.  I ran to the corner of my room to grab the broom I had used earlier that day.  I looked like a lunatic at this point, because I was beating my door with a broom handle, screaming like I’m Zena freakin’ Warrior Princess.   I freaked out even more when I realized that the banging I was doing was only making that furry brown-bat-butt bounce more into my room.

I decided I needed an alternate plan of action.  I armed myself..with my hoodie and a robe (to provide adequate padding between me and the bat).  Then,  I ran across the hall to get the light switch, with the intent that it would hopefully keep the bat from flying back into the hallway.

I began the task of waking up Paul.  That child is dead to the world once he falls asleep.  I succeeded after the fifth try, which was lucky for him, since I was starting to formulate a plan to wake him up that involved cold water and a bucket.   I had him take the kittens and the mommy cat into his room, and then turn off the hall light once I closed my door.

I went back into my room, carefully avoiding the part of the door with the bat, and stood guard over that door for almost 30 minutes afterwards.   The whole time I could hear the bat plotting it’s evil scheme to get into my room.

Cue the door across the hall.   Oh CRAP.  It was my 3 yr old.   I opened my door and ushered her in quickly.  When I looked up on the door where the bat was, I just saw empty space.  I was naive and assumed the bat abandoned it’s evil plan to take over the world. Uh, I mean it’s plan to come into my room.  I was sadly mistaken.

I finally saw where my ol’ batty friend had gone to.  He attatched himself to the door frame about 2 feet above my head.  EWWW.  I closed the door, ran for my bed, and got under the covers with my daughter.

The bat ended up staying right there until Ben came home.  He was carefully scooped up and tossed out into the night.  MY HERO.

Ooh I really dislike bats! We have them around our house too and they fly around at night at the front of our door. If we get home late I run like a crazy women from my car to the house.

Saying hiya from SITS!! Oh, goodness! That must have be frightening! I’ve never had a bat in our house, but once when I was very little we had I swear a GIANT mouse in our house. I remember being up on a table (because it was running all about around the floor) although I was more curious than frightened…lol…I would imagine though that that wasn’t as fighting as having a real live BAT in the house. I think if I saw one of those I’d head for the hills faster than a speeding bullet…. :)

Oh man… that’s too bad! I kinda dig bats. Here in Austin we’re all bat-crazy. We have the largest urban bat population in the world (or maybe just North America, I can never remember). We go downtown to watch them leave their under-the-bridge home at dusk in the millions. I say “we,” but really I just mean the tourists. I’ve gone a couple of times and get bored after the first million have left the roost…

  38. mimiexpress@yahoo.ca Says:

Hey from sitsgirls….I don’t mind bats sooo much because they eat a whole lot of bugs…but I certainly don’t want them as room mates!

  53. piecemeal people Says:

    Uggghhhh. I’ve got a serious case of goosebumps going here. I once encountered a baby bat outside my apartment door and when I called animal control, they told me I could either put it back up into its nest (I DON’T THINK SO) or put it in a plastic bag until it suffocated. Again, no thanks. I knocked on a neighbor’s door and he put it back in the nest for me. {Shiver}
