FAQ
Why Adoption?
We have been asked many questions about our adoption journey to adopt a little girl from China. Here is a little FAQ that I hope will answer your questions.
Q. Why Do You Want To Adopt? Why China?
A. Ever since my miscarriages (back in 2002) my husband and I had talked a lot about adoption. We wanted to have another child and thought that was a wonderful way to go about filling our homes with more love and laughter. We decided that even if we did come to have more children biologically, we still wanted to adopt.
Over the last few years, I had thought about adoption on and off but not very seriously. Though, I would always be deeply touched whenever I heard someone talk about their adoption journey.
God has put the desire to adopt in my heart, so I will follow it.
Fast forward to January of this year. Out of nowhere, I had this deep desire to start looking into adoption again. In China. Keep in mind that I do not want to have another child, biological or otherwise, for a few years, so that desire wasn’t coming from me wanting more children at the time. In short, I feel that God is leading us to China.
I decided to do as much research as I could on China and Adoption. One of the books I read is called The Lost Daughters Of China by Karin Evans. That book just solidified everything for me. If you are thinking of adoption or want to know more about female child abandonment in China, I would definitely recommend that book.
Q. What Agency Will You Use?
A. I searched online and came across two agencies that dealt exclusively with China. One is a Christian agency. The other has deep ties to China and was highly recommended. They are Great Wall China Adoption and Living Hope Adoption Agency I’m thinking we are going to go with GWCA but I’m still hesitant because Living Hope is christian.
Q. When Will You Begin The Adoption Process?
A. In China, the laws for adoption state that both adoptive parents must be at least 30 years old before they can adopt. That means that as of 7-27-07 we have about a 3 year wait.
Q. You Don’t Have The Money To Adopt or Are You Rich?
A. We are not rich. We hope to be someday, but for now we are not. We realize that children take lots of money, and an adoption takes even more. Rest assured that we wont go into debt to adopt. China’s adoption laws state that the household income for our family size (including the adoptee) will have to be $60,000 a year. You also have to have a net worth of $80,000. Until we do that, we will not be able to adopt from China. I have faith that God will bring us to adoption at His perfect time. I’m going along with the plan that it will be around 2010, but it may not be until we are starting our empty nest phase. That’s ok. I will wait.
